Looting

I'd like to take some time to address the looting going on in New Orleans. What I have heard from most people is that it is OK to loot necessities, but not durable goods ie. TVs, stereos, etc.
This is not correct. In this situation, which is similar to the movie Escape From New York, it is perfectly acceptable to loot anything.

The logic behind this is as follows. Of course, looting necessities is fine in this situation, but when your local supermarket runs out of necessities you may need the durable goods to barter for food, water, or safe passage. Don't think there aren't jackals out there demanding these items for goods and services, there are. It's human nature.

Some people here are seriously short of cash, and it's not just the poor. I heard a woman on NPR today say that she only had $80.00 to her name. She has no opportunity to get money out of her bank, it's underwater. Not a lot of working ATMs in the area either, although, if her bank is underwater, it is probably offline anyway.

When it comes down to it, this crap is insured, and it is crap.
